PASTORAL CARE AT THE INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL

At d’Overbroeck’s, the health and welfare of our students is always a number one priority from the moment a student chooses to study with us.

PRE-ARRIVAL PREPARATIONS

From the very beginning we help our students to settle into their new school community and life in Oxford. Our incoming international students receive regular communications from the school to help them prepare for their arrival in the UK and to find out more about our school community and local area.

We ask new students to take part in our online New Student Transition programme to explore their subjects and academic programmes in more detail, and to meet other students before they arrive. Each new student will have a ‘meet and greet’ with key senior staff before they arrive in the UK.

OUR INDUCTION PROGRAMME

Once students arrive in Oxford they embark on an induction programme, introducing them to life at the school, key members of staff and the local area. This programme has been specifically designed to support international students, including personal activities such as registering at our local doctors’ surgery. Through a variety of team building activities such as treasure hunts and walking tours, our students quickly make friends and settle into their new home.

SUPPORTING OUR STUDENTS

Whilst at d’Overbroeck’s, students have access to various support options to meet their needs. If a student becomes unwell, they are cared for by our School Nurse in our medical room and can receive treatment at our local doctors’ surgery. In any rare case of serious illness, Oxford has some of the best hospitals in the world. Positive mental health and maintaining a healthy wellbeing are key parts of our Personal Development (PD) curriculum.

At the start of the year, we focus on helping students to adjust to school life and living in the UK and address topics such as dealing with culture shock, managing personal finances, and health and wellbeing. Students also have access to School Counsellors who are available for appointments to discuss any greater worries or concerns. Each of our boarding houses are managed by a Head of House. They are on hand to support students 24 hours a day and will make sure they are eating and sleeping well, getting regular exercise and enjoying their leisure time.

COMMUNICATION

We believe that regular and transparent communication is important to ensure students can do their best. Our parent and guardian community therefore receive regular updates from their student’s Head of House and Form Tutor about their child’s personal and academic growth.

From my experience d’Overbroeck’s is the best school I have been to, it’s like being with a family. People are so friendly and I have a lot of friends. It’s fun being at the school, and engaging as our teachers are so supportive.
