We planted a tree for the Jubilee!

This week we were delighted to be presented with two fruit trees by our inhouse catering team, enabling us to take part in the Queen’s Green Canopy initiative. The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) is a unique tree planting initiative to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee. It invites people from across the United Kingdom to “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee” and register it on the Queen’s Green Canopy online map. Everyone from individuals, schools and corporates to villages, cities and counties are being encouraged to play their part to enhance our environment by planting trees. The tree gift pack containing two native fruit trees (a crab apple and a wild pear) were chosen for their hardiness and blossom which is loved by bees, and were accompanied by care and planting instructions, a poster to raise awareness amongst pupils and educational sessions on the benefits of tree planting. The trees are from Alba Trees, the UK’s premier forest tree and hedging nursery, who are dedicated to encouraging tree planting, fighting climate change and helping the environment. Their trees are of the highest quality – grown from native seed, established in polytunnels and then hardened in the East Lothian countryside, for the best possible start to life. Our principal Jonathan helped to plant our first tree in the beautiful garden at Nash boarding house. This tree is Crab Apple (Malus Sylvestria), a small rounded tree with ovate leaves and clusters of pink-tinged white flowers which are loved by bees and the yellow-green fruits can be turned into jelly. The second tree will be planted soon at another of our sites.   The dogs at Nash house also came out to play!

Our catering team are part of Holroyd Howe, a leading UK foodservice operator working exclusively for independent schools and who are well known for providing ‘more than a meal’. Freshly prepared every day, their food offer is heavily underlined with age-relevant messaging around nutrition and sustainability, with food waste and healthy eating initiatives, seasonal tasting tables and chef/supplier demonstrations all brought to life in an engaging and inspiring way.
