Welcome to Years 7-11

A word from Jane Cockerill, Head of Years 7-11

We have been described as “a school of energy, laughter and achievement” and that’s true – but d’Overbroeck’s is also a school where people matter and where we want everyone to thrive. A successful education to us is also a happy one where you can grow and be your own person.

We are Oxford’s only fully co-educational independent school from age 11 through to Sixth Form. Our aim is for every one of our students to meet his or her personal potential. That journey begins in Year 7 (or in Year 9 for those joining us from Prep schools), where this potential is identified, challenged and given every opportunity to grow. At the heart of our ethos is the knowledge and celebration of each of our students as an individual. Our consistently proven academic excellence comes as a result of this ethos, as does our community of students who are engaged, happy and at ease with themselves and their peers.

Teachers and students use first-name terms to encourage students to ask questions, to discuss their work openly and to share ideas. We also have a light touch uniform because we like people to be themselves. Furthermore, having small classes of up to 15 students allows our teachers and staff to really get to know students and have the space and time to discuss and be involved.

Our Years 7-11 school is on a different site to our Sixth Form so that our students can grow at their own speed in the right environment for this age group before moving on to a dedicated Sixth Form teaching centre. The result is a happy, busy and extremely successful environment which values learning, curiosity and happiness.

d’Overbroeck’s has always been a place of positive relationships and shared purpose; a place where academic and extra-curricular achievement, personal development and hearty laughter all come on the same wavelength. And we do our best to ensure that this is always the case!

A co-educational, independent secondary school in Oxford

Our ethos is what makes us different from other independent schools. We work with each individual student to help them meet their potential. We believe in leading by example, in a flexible approach to learning and in the idea that students learn best when they are happy.

"One of my favourite things at Years 7-11 is the range of Music groups and activities. There are so many to get involved in and lots of opportunities to perform if you want to - it's great!"

Sixth Form progression

After successfully completing their GCSEs at Years 7-11, most of our students continue to study at d’Overbroeck’s Sixth Form.

Why choose d’Overbroeck’s Sixth Form?

The Sixth Form is the largest of our sites and effectively prepares students for university and beyond. At the Sixth Form, 35 A-Level subjects are currently on offer, plus a comprehensive academic enrichment programme to stretch our students beyond the standard curriculum. The broad range of academic subjects that students can access makes d’Overbroeck’s an ideal place for bright, ambitious students to achieve their full potential academically, but also a place they can thrive outside of the standard curriculum.

We offer a range of co-curricular activities for students to get involved in across drama, music, and sport, and an extensive list of clubs and activities. Additionally, we offer a packed programme of trips, excursions, and regular social events. Many students at the Sixth Form choose to do an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) as part of their academic enrichment activities. The majority of students go on to university, and we have an excellent record of success with entry to Oxford and Cambridge, Russell Group, and international institutions, as well as prestigious medical, law, veterinary and art schools. We offer significant Higher Education and Careers support including application writing advice and interview practice.

We work with each individual student to help them meet their potential. Our Sixth Form develops students to have excellent breadth and depth of knowledge; who flourish physically, intellectually, emotionally and ethically; and who excel in traditional academic subjects.
