In the wake of the Toronto Raptors’ victory in the NBA finals, another mammoth final took place last Tuesday at the famous Iffley Road Sports Centre. This test was between the staff and students of d’Overbroeck’s, and the much anticipated match up lived up to its billing.
The game started with the student team showing a sharper edge as they quickly scored the first three baskets, only to be surprised by the staff team and the dominant form of Johny Richards under the basket. The first quarter ended with the scores close. Zhe Rui having lead the attack for the students, Johny big under the basket for the staff, and coach Leon O’Rourke scoring his first 3 pointer of the afternoon. 2019-20 team captain Lovro tried his best to motivate his troupe with the threat of push ups if they didn’t open up a healthier lead by the half time. Unfortunately for Lovro, a lack of discipline from our student team lead to a second quarter where the staff were awarded a number of free throws. Johny again capitalising to add to his points tally, Ben Martin, and Dylan Swanepoel also using free throws to add to the staff total. The half ended with the scores at 20 – 16 in the students’ favour.
In the second half, our student team found their feet, with some excellent distribution of the ball, well worked attacks, and better defence against Johny‘s post play and Leon’s dribbling and long-ranged shots. Impressive drives from Ian, Will, and a few fancy layups from JJ saw the students start to pull away. The game finished with a flurry of points for the students, Spencer hitting a couple of 3 pointers, Lovro providing a captain’s contribution, Nazar, David, and Jaume finishing strong. This coupled with an injury to points machine Johny meant the game finished 47-27 for the students. A solid win for a strong performance.
Big thanks to the staff who got involved as well as our honorary staff member Melissa who earned some valuable points for the staff.
