“This summer term, we were lucky enough to go and see the spectacular classic Romeo and Juliet at The Swan Theatre in Stratford.
The RSC impressed with their production about these two star-crossed lovers. Bally Gill and Karen Fishwick starred as Romeo and Juliet; they were convincing in their portrayal of two teenagers madly and stupidly in love. One of the surprises was that Romeo’s best mate Mercutio was actually played by a woman which added a modern idea to it.
The set was rather grey but I liked the way they used a central cube which acted as a balcony, a drinks bar and the friar’s cell. The theatre itself looked amazing as it is modelled on The Globe in London with the addition of a roof which brings the advantages of modern lighting.
We all had a great time despite the soaring heat – there was, of course, ice cream to cool us down. On the journey home, a few of us might have had a snooze, though the back seat partied away.”
