On Tuesday 26 March, d’Overbroeck’s competed in its first-ever Ladies basketball fixture against King Alfred’s Academy. We were all nervous beforehand, having never competed together as a team and feeling the added pressure of a historic match for the school. After a quick recap of our team tactics and a warm-up, we were ready to play.
Soon enough, Georgina stepped up to take the first jump ball and the game was on. d’Overbroeck’s established an early lead of 2-11 in the first half as guards Melissa and Jay took advantage of fast breaks opportunities and forwards made a number of interceptions in and around the key. When half time was called, we were comfortably ahead with a total score of 6-18.
However, the game started to tighten up in the second half as fatigue set in and King Alfred’s found their rhythm. A low scoring third quarter and unsuccessful attempt at a full court press led to disarray on the court. We were tired, some of us injured, and beginning to lose morale as King Alfred’s began to close the gap.
A timeout was called half-way through the fourth quarter to rally us for the rest of the match. Johny emphasised the importance of team-work and communication, and we returned to the court with a renewed determination to win. Our scoring began to pick up again, closely matched by a serious of superb shots from King Alfred’s. Spurred on by the steadily ticking clock, we sprang into action for the final few minutes and the score was 26-24 by full time.
For our first outing as a team, this is a great result. Top scorers Melissa (10pts) and Zosia
(8pts) played superbly, along with the rest of the squad; Georgina, Punch, Jay, and me. Special thanks go to Lina and Nina from the International School for playing with us. With an undefeated record and some clear coaching points, we look forward to our upcoming match against Cherwell!
