d’Overbroeck’s 3-2 King Alfred’s Academy
After a disappointing defeat last week at the hands of Cherwell, d’Overbroeck’s were looking to bounce back in their second league game of the season.
A lively start to the game saw d’Overbroeck’s miss a number of glorious opportunities, with Jack Perrett and Sam Pennink going close. The start of the game was polar opposite to last week, with d’Overbroeck’s starting with a high energetic tempo creating chance after chance. Dan Gowler and Louis Macpherson were instrumental in the midfield creating openings, the only problem being the ball wouldn’t go in. With five minutes to go in the first half, King Alfred’s managed to convert their only chance of the half. After some scrappy defending the ball was eventually bundled in, 0-1. Despite going in at half time 0-1 down, it was all positives after such a good first half performance.
The second half proved to be similar to the first with d’Overbroeck’s again creating chance after chance. Jack Perrett struck the crossbar and makeshift winger Ed Wright also went close after a good run on right. Substitute David Helgason finally found the breakthrough, (although doing his best to miss an open goal) he fired the ball into the roof of the net, 1-1. Within two minutes all the pressure finally paid off when Jack Perrett’s scuffed shot found its way into the bottom corner, 2-1. King Alfred’s would then take the upper hand in the game, but thanks to some brave goalkeeping and some tremendous saves Oli Davenport kept d’Overbroeck’s lead intact. With 10 minutes to go King Alfred’s converted a chance to make it 2-2. However, d’Overbroeck’s found one last push, and thanks to a neat finish by Sam Pennink the lead was restored.
The game would finish this way, in what was a terrific display from the boys. It was a great comeback after last week’s game and shows what they can achieve when they all work hard for each other.
Man of the match: Oli Davenport – after a quiet first half, he stepped up when his team needed him with 4/5 outstanding saves. Special mention to Cliff Howie for captaining the team and being a real leader. Well done boys.
