Pop quiz: what does AD/SR stand for? LFO? What’s an envelope? A filter?*
If you’re not 100% on your Music Tech terms and acronyms then you need a guide through this musical labyrinth. He is called IAMYANK. Actually, his real name is Janos Herald, and he is from Hungary – a fine drummer, guitarist and pianist, and a composer/teacher/arranger. He also has seriously long hair.
Last Thursday, Janos gave a quick class to our Year 9 and 10 musicians in how to create sound, both from scratch using a synthesiser and by using sampling to manipulate a sound that you have recorded. It also helps if you have something called a granulator. We then got busy making some music: Using our feet Janos created a bass drum; we clapped to make a snare drum; we all played an F# on our instruments to create a Pad; and we ran out of time making a hi-hat using a tray of forks. The overall effect was really effective, and Janos gave our students an inspiring insight into how to use technology to make amazing sounds for composition.
Thank you to Davi Singh, Education Officer for OCMF, for organising this event as part of d’Overbroeck’s ongoing partnership with OCMF.
