You may have seen the eye-catching banner on the gates at our Years 7-11 site this week. It is advertising the Oxford Chamber Music Ensemble, which we are supporting as Partner School. As part of that partnership OCMF performers came to d’Overbroeck’s last week to give a musical workshop to our Year 7’s and Year 6 students from a couple of other local schools.
I mistakenly thought that the composer of Ferdinand the Bull was French, and was mentally pronouncing his name Alan Reedoo. But, no, it’s actually just plain old Alan Ridout, English as fish and chips. His piece, however, has all of the flavours of Spain, and Hannah Dawson (violinist) and Graham Topping (narrator) whisked us to the Spanish bull ring where dear, flower-loving Ferdinand (the bull) simply didn’t want to play at all. Year 7 loved hearing this tale and, joined by Year 6 classes from St Aloysius and St Barnabas primary schools, helped devise and perform sound effects and leitmotifs (theme tunes to the uninitiated) for a performance of The Three Little Pigs.
