It was with great anticipation that the Year 7 front crawl swimmers entered the pool for the first race of the d’Overbroeck’s Swimming Gala 2018, held at the Rosenblatt Pool, Oxford.
Students from all House teams stood expectantly waiting for the starter to release the competitors.
The first race, Year 7, 25m Front Crawl was won by Tom Furlonger (Cooper House) in a time of 16.43 seconds. This was followed by A & B races for the year groups in Front Crawl, Breast Stroke and Back Stroke. All swimmers ensured there were highly competitive races throughout the gala, with outstanding individual performances by Miki Petrovic, Kayden Sillah, Cassidy Walton and Alex Pryce.
The frantic pace of the relays ensured an entertaining end to the gala with all competitors producing wonderfully spirited performances and a close battle between Cooper and Morris Houses. The final honours would go to the team which won the last race of the programme: The ‘Cannon’ is a unique event where one male and one female competitor from each year group compete consecutively in a 6 x 25m relay. This race was won by Cooper House which meant as a consequence they won the Swimming Gala for the first time in their history! Morris House came a very close second to the overall winners with Austin finishing third. House representatives Miki Petrovic and Kayden Sillah received the award on behalf of a jubilant Cooper team.
The final scores were:
- Cooper 309 points
- Morris 286 points
- Austin 247 points
As an added treat at the end of the gala, our best swimmers raced in an Individual Medley race. This race consisted of a very tiring 25m Butterfly; 25m Back Stroke; 25m Breast Stroke followed by a 25m Front Crawl. It was an absolute pleasure to watch: Alex Pryce; Miki Petrovic; Archie Kennedy; Kayden Sillah; Helena Pryce and Cassidy Walton swim this technical and exhausting race. Congratulations to Alex Pryce who pipped Miki Petrovic to the finish.
Congratulations to Cooper House for winning the Swimming Gala Trophy!
