Last Monday, 10 students and 2 members of staff headed to Loughborough University for a tour of the campus and to take part in several workshops. During the morning the students were treated to a look around the fantastic sporting facilities that Loughborough has to offer – spotting a few high level performers training on the way round!
The first workshop was based on Nutrition where a PhD student discussed what is ‘Healthy Eating’. Very interesting and engaging. The second workshop took place in the laboratory, involving testing students power and aerobic capacity. The star of the show was d’Overbroeck’s Sport Scholar Adam, who volunteered to complete the Vo2max test. This involved exercise where the intensity was increased every minute and his oxygen consumption measured until exhaustion. Adam’s results were extremely impressive. His reading of 75.5 ml/kg/min puts him way above the ‘excellent’ category for his age, and sits him in between the like of David Beckham and Chris Froome’s readings! The final workshop was Sports Psychology, focusing on the effectiveness of goals setting and its impact on sport.
Overall, it was an inspiring visit for many of our students who wish to study Sports related degrees at University.
