Weekly themes

Examples of weekly themes (ordered alphabetically)

Themes will vary from week to week, but will always be fun, exciting and related to the UK.

Each themed week will involve you in a range of lively workshops and activities, linked to that particular theme.

This will encourage you to develop and put into practice vocabulary and grammar relevant to a range of modern day issues.

Weekly themes will include:

Discovering Design

(Experiencing English in the context of style and design)

Globally Green

(Experiencing English in the context of global and environmental issues)

Media Mania

(Experiencing English in the context of the media, culture and art)

Music and the Performing Arts

(Experiencing English in the context of music and the performing arts)

Past and Present

We have excellent links to industry experts and leading professionals and academics, meaning that the workshops may be run by a Shakespearian actress, a performance poet, an astronomer, a fashion designer and more!

In Discovering Design week, for example, you would learn the language of the leading UK Design industry; look at the work of designers of fashion, buildings and objects; visit the Design Museum; and put what you’ve learned into practice by designing your own object or fashion show.

In Media Mania week you would learn the language of the UK Media; visit the BBC Oxford television studios or the offices of the Oxford Times newspaper; and then put what you’ve learned into practice by writing your own TV script or newspaper.

This year, we will be introducing the theme Time Out which inolves experiencing English in the context of leisure and activity.

"The themes are all very different and you learn lots of things from this course which you can take away with you: linguistically; academically and culturally." (Jan Willem, Holland, Summer 2007)
