"Hello. My name is Lukas and I am
from Germany.
I was on the d’Overbroeck’s Summer Programme for 3 weeks. It was the
description in the catalogue that initially caught my attention. I really liked
the sound of the themes especially the Drama. The main idea of the course was
to teach us some English but to organise the teaching through weekly topics. I also
wanted to be in Oxford.
In Germany they say that in Oxford you speak the
best, true English!
The course was truly amazing and
the students were really cool and you could discuss almost anything you wanted
with them. It’s a different way of teaching on the programme. With the teachers
it was a case of, ‘Here I am and I love what I’m doing’. The teacher/pupil
relationship was refreshing. You could make jokes in the classroom and it was a
completely different style of teaching compared to what we know in Germany:
completely open hearted teachers who have a love for their subject and try to
get you into the topic too. The course used the media in a completely different
and new way. The focus was on using English in a natural and relevant way.
The afternoon activities were
fun. It was the next step of the way of teaching and was open-hearted and fun.
I felt that the teaching and activities were closely related and the activities
went deeper into the subject matter. The accommodation was very comfortable and
there was a fantastic atmosphere in the student residence, Hayfield House.
I made some deeper friendships
during the course. The nationality mix was great with not too many people from
the same nationality. I learnt about Britain and British culture too
through activities such as having a traditional English cream tea.
My lasting memory of the course
is that the two weeks did not seem like two weeks. There was not enough time to
spend with these really great people!"
