Timea Suli

One of the College's first two Environmental Awareness Scholars (the other being Danielle Greenspan), Timea is helping us to make d'Overbroeck's greener...

Timea is studying Politics, Economics, Philosophy and English, and joined us in 2008 as one of our new Environmental Awareness scholars.

‘We were only supposed to ask [our MP] a couple of questions each – but I couldn't stop!’

Thinking about broader issues

She's come from Matthew Arnold School, at which she was the driving force behind the planning of a dedicated wildlife area. She found out about the new Environmental scholarship on the d'Overbroeck's website and decided to apply – attracted by the idea of going beyond considerations merely of her own personal development to those of broader issues.

Timea's political ambitions

Already an active environmentalist, Timea has acted as a delegate to the Houses of Parliament, posing questions to Oxford MP Evan Harris:

"It was great. We were only supposed to ask a couple of questions each – but I couldn't stop!"

Perhaps it is no surprise that Timea has political ambitions herself. She feels drawn to the Liberal Democrats, despite a slight hesitancy: "My mother will kill me!"

Helping d'Overbroeck's go green

‘I want to talk to people, communicate ... If they get dictated to, it'll become a chore.’

Central to the role of the environment scholar is the duty to make ongoing efforts – in partnership with College staff – to take a lead in promoting environmental good practice. It's only a few days since term started, but does Timea already have plans for d'Overbroeck's?

Recycling is one thing she's keen to focus on – improving uptake of the College's recycling facilities and perhaps broadening their scope. But she's eager not to impose her ideas on others:

"I want to talk to people, communicate ... If they get dictated to, it'll become a chore. So whatever I do I want to encourage everyone to work together as a team."

She's looking forward to talking to her fellow students – and College staff – and getting everyone involved.
