Music at d'Overbroeck's

Grease is the word

Our musical this year was Grease. We asked one of our first year students, Megan Ahern, to review the performances for us.

For three nights at the beginning of May, we were all transported back to the 1950s, as the Sixth Form and Leckford Place put on a performance of the musical Grease at the O’Reilly Theatre at Keble College. The classic story of good girl Sandy meets bad boy Danny was skilfully reproduced, thanks to a wonderful cast, including Scarlett McLean as Sandy, James Utechin as Danny with fantastic music direction from Melanie Ward. In the band were Gidon Fineman on keyboard, Henry Parker and Josh Rigal on guitar, and Korbinian Rossbauer on drums. Thanks also go to Fran Bucknall and Caoileann Curry, who directed the performance.

The feeling of the ‘50s was conveyed through the fantastic costumes. With James’s quiff, leather jacket and turned up jeans, he was the spitting image of John Travolta. Oliver Keane’s “Teen Angel” with his bright red outfit adorned with stars and large collar was reminiscent of Elvis Presley, and the insanely large curls completed the look. Nyeleti Honwana also played a highly convincing Miss Lynch. The students managed to construct a brilliant version of the 1950s T-Bird which formed the backdrop for ‘Greased Lightning’. Throughout the performance the audience was invited to join in and at the end of the show, the cast did a reprise of the song We Go Together, complete with the words projected onto the wall for audience participation!

For those who didn’t get the chance to see Grease, I urge you to look at the pictures on the d’Overbroeck’s website! I will never get over Oli Keane’s horrendous costume and manic curls! An excellent reproduction of an all-time classic!

It’s not only rock and roll!

Our Annual Winter Recital always provides an excellent showcase for the talents of our students and last winter’s event was no different. The concert featured a wide range of pieces from Bach to Eminem, from Gershwin to Hendrix. The audience was treated to a superb array of individual and group performances that spanned opera, swing, rock, classical, traditional, and modern, to name but a few. Performances combined to form an inspiring evening in which the abilities and enthusiasm of students shone through.

In addition to the musical items of the evening, the audience enjoyed poetry and drama readings from members of the Sixth Form Drama class. Excerpts include Robert Burns, William Blake, Emily Bronte, and W.B. Yeats, were united by the theme of love of the natural world, and the changing of the seasons.

The evening was brought to an unforgettable close with an energetic street dance routine choreographed by Katie Jones-Beattie, to the music of Akon.
