At A level students study fewer subjects than at GCSE but in much greater depth. Students are expected to spend more time researching and working independently. There are, as a result, free periods where students should be studying on their own. Managing these periods is an important part of the transition from GCSE. At d'Overbroeck's there are classes from Monday through to Friday; we do not usually have lessons on Saturdays or Sundays. However in the weeks leading up to their AS and A level examinations students do have internal "mock" exams on a few Saturdays to make sure they are absolutely ready. Typically the day finishes at 4.35pm in the first year of the sixth form and 6.00pm in the second year although this will depend entirely on the specifics of each person's timetable which in turn depends on which subjects they choose and which groups they are in. Lessons are usually 70 minutes long although there may be a few longer lessons that last 1 hour and 45 minutes; for example science practicals. In the first year students have 4 lessons a week per subject (you will usually be studying 4 subjects) as well as meetings with their Director of Studies and some library sessions. In the second year of the sixth form students have 5 lessons per subject. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, lessons finish early (at 2.30 pm on Tuesday and 3.25 pm on Thursday); these afternoons are devoted to a sport and other extra-curricular activities. These are not compulsory but there is usually something you will want to try! |
