Academic Matters

Choosing your A level subjects

Some students know exactly what combination of subjects they wish to study in the Sixth Form; many will have a longish shortlist in mind and will find it hard to refine this down to the requisite number.

Our advice is always to start by thinking broadly, to explore a fair range of possible subjects before settling on your final combination. You'll want to come to one of our Open Mornings and to use this as an opportunity to talk to a wide range of heads of department, teaching colleagues and students. Following that, you will come in again for a meeting with the Head of Lower Sixth or the Academic Head of Sixth Form to talk through and refine your shortlist to your final choices.

We are also very happy to arrange for prospective students to come in for a trial day during which they can sit in on lessons in the subjects in which they are interested before finalising their choices.

We offer a wide range of subjects and aim to offer a high degree of flexibility in subject choice and combinations. Unlike most other schools, we don't start by presenting you with a set of fixed option blocks. Instead, we work with you to arrive at what is going to be the optimum combination for you - in the light of your interests, strengths and aspirations. We are fortunate in having timetable structure that offers an exceptional degree of flexibility and can usually accommodate 99.9% of the subject combinations for which we are asked each year.
