Background “I was studying in York, I had been there for 3 years and a term. I left because I didn’t like the teaching that much and because its far away from London – which is easier to fly home from Heathrow. My sister recommended d’Overbroeck’s. She said that if you want to do Business studies or Economics then d’Overbroeck’s will be the place.” The highlights so far? The music performance at Jacqueline du Pres and the ‘Little Shop of Horrors’; they were good, I enjoyed them. For the musical we had to learn how to dance to songs and learn the words to songs it wasn’t anything special to any other play – it was just really enjoyable because of the people around because we were with the year 11’s and year 10’s as well. That was with Lucy and Victoria and then there’s Rachel – she’s the choreographer. I was singing in the Jacqueline du Pres – I sang ‘Killing me Softly’ and ‘The way we were’. Before I went on stage I was very nervous – I was kind of like, oh no no, I’m not going to be able to do this, but once I got on stage everyone was smiling and I felt ok, calmed down and start singing. I’ve only sung in public, public about four times before. The musical was absolutely tiring but in the end once it was all performed and everything then we were all so pleased because people said it’s really enjoyable, its good and they enjoyed it. They laughed and everything so that was like, that’s the return that we got. I was the Urchin, basically the forest people, trying to walk funny and moving around.” **d’Overbroeck’s students** “They are actually different from my old school because I was at an all girls school and people here are much more friendly I guess, and much easier to talk to. They are much more involved, with the friends I hang around with now but they are all from absolutely different backgrounds and we all get along fine but in my old school its kind of like I stay here and you stay here which is not so good.” The teachers “One thing I find with most teachers here is they are very very committed, extremely, I was so surprised…because no-one would come in on a Sunday and teach in my old school – but here Simon is like hello, I’m here on the one day holiday for half term. They are much more understanding as well like Clare my Maths teacher, if you don’t understand then she will explain it to you again and again and again until you go, “Yeah, I actually understand”. |
