Chemistry

Biology, Chemistry, Physics

These courses are designed for students studying at either intermediate or higher level. We cater for both students studying the three sciences separately (3 GCSE’s) or for those studying the new Science and Additional Science courses (2 GCSE’s). Students may study all three sciences or focus on one or two in combination with other non-science subjects. The course is not suitable for those studying only core science (1 GCSE).

The course will focus on science content (facts and key concepts). “How Science Works”, revision techniques and exam technique will be covered during the teaching of the science content. There will be extensive practice of exam style questions and the opportunity for students to receive individual help throughout the course. The three Sciences are taught separately by specialist teachers and areas of overlap are highlighted.

Chemistry

The primary aim of the Chemistry course will be to clarify and revise the foundation topics which underpin the subject, because without a firm understanding of the basic ideas the GCSE student will struggle to memorise and apply the factual content of the subject effectively. We shall therefore cover: Bonding, Physical Properties, Formulas (how to work them out, so the student does not have to memorise each of them) and Types of Reaction (such as acid-base reactions, oxidation, reduction, polymerisation). We shall pay particular attention to topics which many students find difficult, such as molar calculations, industrial processes, and the reactions of metals and their compounds. The small teaching groups make it easy for the students to resolve individual queries and problems.
