History (Modern World)

The History course will focus on Modern World History (twentieth century) and is designed to cater for students following syllabuses provided by all the main examination boards*.

Since all syllabuses differ in terms of which material falls within the core content and which options are offered, the precise coverage of topics will depend on the needs of the individual students on the course. However, it is anticipated that central themes, such as the following, will be included:
The two World Wars; the Versailles settlement; the League of Nations; inter-war diplomacy; Hitler’s foreign policy, appeasement and the causes of the Second World War; the origins of the Cold War; Germany 1919-45; the USSR 1917-41; the USA 1918-41.

Perhaps more important than coverage of factual material is the overriding emphasis on the skills and techniques required for History GCSE. These are common to all boards and syllabus options, and for much of the week we shall focus on using material in the manner required for GCSE success. An important part of this process will involve going through and practising past papers in class.

*Examination boards
Please note that, although we hope to be able to cater for students from all the main examination boards, they are not all mutually compatible. In particular, if you are following either the Edexcel or Welsh boards, you must give full details of exactly which topics (with dates) you have studied and are hoping to cover.
