PE & Sport at Leckford Place

The focus of physical education at Leckford Place is ensuring that all students fully enjoy the activities on offer and most of all, that they reach their full potential.

Leckford Place School ensures that all pupils, from the most sporting pupils to the least athletic, find out which sports and activities they enjoy the most.

The PE programme serves as an outlet for the pupils energy and exuberance. The sports programme builds values such as self-confidence, team-spirit and fair play.

TIMETABLE & LESSON AllOCATION

Physical Education is a core subject from Year 7 through to Year 11. The number of lessons that each class has and the facilities they use depend on the age of the pupil and the availability of facilities and resources. In recent years due to the growth of the school and the continuing construction work the number of lesson held offsite has increased. This has meant both a change in the location of lessons and the actual number of lessons.

All year groups enjoy two double lessons of physical education a week. The sports taught are the traditional seasonal sports of Rugby, Hockey, Football, Netball, Swimming, Tennis, Cricket & Rounders and Athletics.

OFF-SITE FACILITIES & RESOURCES AVAILABLE FOR PHYSICAL EDUCATION

The school currently uses sports grounds to cater for the needs to the curriculum offsite. In addition to these main bases it often proves necessary to book facilities for specific requirements.

The main areas of the curriculum are taught off site. This is only a 5 minute journey from school by mini bus.

Offsite local sports facilities are used for the curriculum apart from the school sport sports day when we locate to Tilsley Park, Abingdon and use an excellent facility for the day. We currently use these sports facilities during the term:

SPORTS

The range of sports offered throughout the academic year are:

Hockey Rugby Football Netball Basketball Swimming Tennis Badminton Table Tennis Cricket Rounders Athletics

Fixtures As a new and growing school we are developing a fixture list with schools that have similar teams with a range of abilities. As a small school we are aware of our capabilities to match ourselves against the right opposition, ensuring the pupils enjoy the experience. This is ongoing and we hope to play even more competitive fixtures as the terms progress.

Extra-curricular Sport and other activities At Leckford place we are always encouraging new sports or activities to be participated in. Activities that have been included in our programme throughout the year are:

• Rowing • Fencing • Sailing • Netball Club • Riding • Football • Basketball

PE and sport are an integral and important part of the curriculum. The School offers a broad and diverse range of activities, both as part of the core curriculum and also as after school activities.

The programme varies from term to term and offers a combination of team and individual sports which at various points may include football, hockey, rugby, basketball, netball, tennis, swimming, fencing and rowing, as well as physical activity such as dance, movement and gymnastics.

All pupils will have 2 sessions (the equivalent of four double periods) of PE per week. We use a variety of sports venues and facilities. The school hall is ideal for a whole host of indoor activities from dance to PE and fencing. For outdoor and team sports, we have long-standing arrangements to use excellent sports facilities at the OUP and the Banbury Road North sports grounds, both on Jordan Hill in North Oxford. Between them, they offer a full-size football pitch, an excellent astro pitch and tennis courts. We offer rowing in conjunction with Oxford City Rowing Club.

Transport is provided for pupils to and from our sports venues.

GCSE PE

For those students wishing to follow the academic route for Physical Education the GCSE course is offered. Students choosing this option will follow separate additional theory and practical lessons with the view to examination in two years time. They will be continually assessed throughout the two years along with a final practical assessment day and written examination. This course is weighted 60% practical, 40 % theory.

The next stage: Sport Studies at A level.

Those who have the interest and ability may go on to study the subject at A level in the Sixth Form. The study of GCSE leads into AS/A2 sports studies.
