Mathematics at Leckford Place

Mathematics at Leckford place is not only about equipping our students to survive in a world of number but also nurturing their powers of logical thinking and problem solving.

Our core belief is that students should develop strong skills in mental arithmetic, algebra and traditional techniques in long-multiplciation and division. With these three prioities mastered, our pupils can then enjoy tackling a wide range of mathematically based problems without an over-dependency on their calculators. We believe this focus gives our pupils the essential skills and confidence to not only enjoy Mathematics but to fully realise their potential.

We want our students to be independent thinkers, imaginative problem solvers and above all, confident enough in themselves and their abilities to talk of numbers and Mathematics without fear or uncertainty.

All of our students are entered in to the UK Mathematics Trust maths challenges either at junior or senior level.

As students progress through the school they are introduced to some famous mathematical problems introducing broader skills in combinatorics, algorithmic problem-solving and topology.

GCSE Mathematics

The department currently follows the Edexcel Exam Board Specification. Our current year 11 students are working from the old 3 tier exam system, with one group studying for the higher tier exam and one for the intermediate tier. There will be no entrants for the foundation tier.

The New two tier system is now underway for year 10 and for all years that follow. The two tiers are now called Higher and Foundation.

In the higher tier students are able to achieve grades from A* to D while for the foundation tier they can achieve up to and including a grade C.

Which tier of entry?

We demand the highest standards from all of our students and we always try to ensure that they achieve the best grade they are capable of. The head of department will make the final decision about which set to place students in and this is always done with the students best interests as a priority consdieration.

Coursework

Coursework will not be required for candidates starting their GCSEs from September 2007. Those required to submit coursework will be expected to complete two pieces of work. The first will be in January of year 10 and the second in January of year 11.
