Oxford is a beautiful city with an interesting history and lots to do. Here are some of the features that make it a great place to live and study.

Home to the famous Oxford University

Oxford University is one of the world's oldest and most famous universities. Its Colleges, libraries and faculties are spread throughout the city.

Only an hour by train from London

It is very easy to travel from Oxford into London or to major airports. The journey takes only an hour by train into the centre of London.

Excellent bus system

Oxford's transport system is very good, and you will be able to travel easily by bus – or you might prefer to travel like a typical Oxford student, by bicycle!

Safe environment

Oxford is a friendly and safe city, and small enough that you will not get lost. Whether you are living in College accommodation or with a host family, you will always be looked after, and you will find that the people of Oxford are welcoming and helpful.

Many activities to try

There is a lot to do in Oxford outside studies – from boating on the river to ice-skating, bowling to theatre. See the box on the right for a list of a few activities available.

Things to do in Oxford

Theatre — both of the main theatres are on George Street, in the centre of town. They are the Oxford Playhouse and the New Theatre.

Sport — facilities include the Kassam Stadium, and the city's ice rink. The closest gym to d'Overbroeck's, meanwhile, is the Ferry Sports Centre.

Cinemas — there are two Odeon cinemas, in the centre of town. Jericho's Phoenix Picturehouse, meanwhile, regularly shows independent and arthouse films.

Museums — for anthropological delights, visit the Pitt Rivers Museum, or go to the Ashmolean for art and archaeology. And see the latest exhibitions at Modern Art Oxford.

Live music — Oxford has many venues, including the Oxford Academy and The Regal. See Oxfordbands for more about the Oxford music scene. Classical concerts are held at the Sheldonian Theatre and Holywell Music Room.
