Oxford University

The University is based on a collegiate system and is divided into 39 colleges.

Stuents compete with hundreds of others in order to be awarded a place at one of the colleges. They usually have to do go through rather tough interviews to prove their interest and capability in their chosen subject.

Once accepted into the University, each student is a member of one of the colleges.

Each college is very different - some are big, some small; some have a reputation for sporting excellence, others for music; some are hundreds of years old, and some new.

It is important for all prospective students to think hard about which college they might like to go to before applying.

Students will live in college, usually for the first two years of their undergraduate degree. They eat, sleep, work and socialise there!

The other distinctive feature of Oxford University is the tutorial system. Each student will spend at least one hour a week discussing their work with a professor who is an expert in the subject. Oxford professors are often some of the top minds in their subject fields.
