A Short History

Oxford is the oldest University in the UK and was founded in the middle of the 13th century. Originally, the colleges were set up to train men for the priesthood.

Over the years a bad relationship developed between the Oxford students and the townspeople which ended in a riot in which some students were killed. As a result, the colleges built high walls in order to keep the students in and the locals out.

That's why some of the colleges look more like castles than places of education!

Oxford continued to grow and develop, and, like Cambridge Univeristy, became one of the great institutions of British life.

Oxford has trained many Prime Ministers, politicians philosphers, artists and scientists throughout the last few centuries. Tony Blair is the latest in a long tradition of Oxford-educated world leaders.

Even today, Oxford University has kept some of its distinctive traditions such as the college system and the tutorial method of teaching.
